~There are a number of points of view regarding television for young children, many of them at varying ends of the spectrum. For the most balanced perspective, we recommend Lisa Guernsey's Into the Minds of Babes: How Screen Time Affects Children from Birth to Age Five. ~Guernsey points out a number of flaws in current media research. She also highlights the self-published admission by the American Academy of Pediatrics that their famous study never looked into program content. This deficiency minimizes the AAP's contribution to the dialogue, for many scientists over the years have addressed the issue of children's media with common sense: good content creates a good result, and bad content creates a bad result. And since much of children's programming is made up of questionable content, it is no wonder that digital media has received mostly negative reviews from doctors and educators. ~But what if there was a new type of programming, based on reality, based on beauty, based on Montessori principles practiced for more than than 106 years in the classroom? What if the programming moved quickly, and yet, because of Baroque music and the soft voice of the presenter, felt peaceful and restful to watch? And what if many children two years of age and older easily learned the sounds of their letters? ~We recommend kinderbright for two reasons...it is extremely peaceful, and it works! |
